MOPED SCHEME

The Kickstart Moped Scheme
Kickstart Norfolk was established to assist people residing within the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire areas to secure and start employment, training or education. We also help individuals to sustain their current employment. To achieve this, we offer our service user an affordable means of transport to provide them with the flexibility and independence they desire.
Kickstart Norfolk's standard model of operation provides the service user with either a Honda Vision 50cc moped or 110cc scooter. Anyone aged 16 and above who is eligible to hold, or currently holds a EU/UK driving licence can apply to join the scheme if they can attain insurance and afford the hire contributions.

As a charity, Kickstart Norfolk are always researching and applying for funding to ensure we can provide the cheapest financial option to the service user. Where funding is available, Kickstart Norfolk will look to pay for the individual to attend the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), issue them with a brand-new Safety Helmet, Armoured Motorcycle Jacket, Pair of Motorcycle Gloves, High Visibility Jacket & a Pair of Waterproof Over-Trousers. However, should funding not be available, the rider must pay for these set up costs prior to a moped or scooter being issued to them.

Compulsory Bike Training (CBT)

Compulsory Bike Training (CBT) is a training course you must take before you ride a moped or motorcycle on the road. The aim of this training is to ensure you can ride safely on the road without supervision while you practise for your full moped or motorcycle test. The Compulsory Bike Training is not a test that you pass or fail, therefore, if your instructor believes you are not at the required standard, additional training will be recommended. After you have successfully completed the CBT, you will be issued with a nationally recognised certificate allowing you to ride on the road, unsupervised, for a period of 2 years, and you can ride a:
  • 50cc moped if you are aged 16 or over
  • A scooter or motorcycle up to 125cc and with a power output of up to 11kW if you’re 17 or over
When riding a moped or motorcycle you must use L plates (L or D plates in Wales) and pass your full moped or motorcycle test within 2 years, or you have to either take the CBT again or stop riding. Failure to abide by the law can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and up to 6 penalty points.

You don’t have to take CBT if you:

  • Want to ride a motorcycle and have a full moped licence from passing a moped test since 1 December 1990.
  • Have a full motorcycle licence for one category and want to upgrade to another.

Safety Equipment & Clothing

At Kickstart Norfolk,  we take rider safety very seriously and to further ensure rider safety, prior to any moped or scooter being issued to a service user. Kickstart Norfolk will sell, issue or check to confirm that an individual is in possession of the following safety equipment & clothing;
Motorcycle Helmet | Kickstart Moped Hire | Norfolk, Cambs & Suffolk border
Motorcycle Helmet - Riders without a helmet are 60% more likely to suffer a fatal head injury in a crash and are three times more likely to suffer brain injuries, than those with helmets.
Amoured Jacket | Kickstart Moped Hire | Norfolk, Cambs & Suffolk border
Armoured Jacket - Jeans, a T-shirt, and trainers are recipes for a painful disaster on a moped, scooter or bike. Instead, you want clothing that will protect you from wind chill, flying bugs and debris, and, yes, lots of road rash if you fall off. For maximum protection, Kickstart will provide a specially designed jacket with rugged padding and breathable mesh material that provide protection as well as ventilation for riding in warm weather. And keep in mind that car drivers who have hit a motorcycle rider often say they just didn't see them, so choose clothing in bright colours.
Motorcycle Gloves | Kickstart Moped Hire | Norfolk, Cambs & Suffolk border
Motorcycle Gloves - The first thing you do in a crash is put your hands out to protect yourself – it’s instinct. Unfortunately, fingers and wrists are fragile, so it doesn’t take much for them to sustain long-term damage. It can take less than a second in contact with the road to remove the skin from your hands so never ride without specialist motorcycling gloves – a strong protective layer is essential.
Waterproof Trousers | Kickstart Moped Hire | Norfolk, Cambs & Suffolk border
Waterproof Trousers - These trousers not only provide you with additional protection in the event of an accident or fall, they will provide additional protection from the predictably unpredictable British weather.
High Visibility Vest | Kickstart Moped Hire | Norfolk, Cambs & Suffolk border
High Visibility Vest - to increase visibility on the road, Kickstart recommend that all riders wear a High Visibility Vest. After an accident, most drivers will state that they did not see the rider, therefore, it is extremely important that you make every effort you can to be seen on the road.
